The Mathematics program at Colac Primary School builds confident and capable mathematicians through clear instruction and regular practice. Teaching follows an explicit model where concepts are explained, demonstrated and practised before students apply their learning independently. Lessons are structured using Cognitive Load Theory so new ideas are introduced in small steps, revisited often and practised until they become automatic.

Each Numeracy Block begins with a short daily review using retrieval practice. This helps students strengthen memory and recall previously learned skills. Students then complete a numeracy fluency session focusing on counting, place value and number facts to build speed and accuracy.

The main mathematics lesson follows the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 and focuses on understanding, reasoning and problem solving. Teachers model worked examples, guide students through practice and gradually release responsibility as confidence grows. Students use visual representations, mathematical language and discussion to explain their thinking and deepen understanding.

Across Prep to Year 6, the consistent lesson structure supports all learners and allows students to focus on thinking mathematically rather than guessing. The goal of the program is strong foundations, flexible thinking and the confidence to tackle unfamiliar problems.
