Teaching and Learning at Colac Primary School

Our teaching and learning approach is informed by the Science of Learning. This is a growing body of research that explains how students learn most effectively. Research shows that learning is strongest when new knowledge is connected to what students already know and when it is built and practised over time.

Learning occurs when information moves from working memory, where it is actively processed, to long-term memory, where it can be stored and used later. Our teaching practices support this process through clear explanations, structured lessons and regular opportunities for review and practice.

We use a Gradual Release of Responsibility approach to support student learning. Teachers model new learning, practise skills with students and then support students to apply their learning independently. This structure helps students build confidence and develop a strong understanding of what they are learning.

Lessons are planned to support and challenge students at their point of need, with a strong focus on learning growth for every child.
